Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to stop Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a firm stance against NFTs. In a blog post titled "Minecraft and NFTs," the studio, which is owned by Microsoft, wrote that "integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we would support or allow."

Mojang declared that blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our client and server applications.  Top minecraft servers "To ensure that Minecraft gamers enjoy a secure and enjoyable experience, neither can Minecraft game-related content like skins, worlds, or items be used by blockchain technology to create a unique digital asset."

Mojang claims that several companies have developed "NFT Implementations that are bundled with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could earn NFTs by playing on a server or by earning them outside of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that these practices encourage digital exclusion and scarcity, which goes against Minecraft's core values. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a situation of the haves and the have-nots," the studio said. Mojang adds that NFTs are speculative and "encourages profiteering."

The blog post is worth reading in full. It provides a variety of criticisms of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in a simple and understandable language. (There are many additional quotes I could have included.)

Valve has also taken a hard stance against NFTs and blockchain games on Steam. Most of the gaming community has opposed NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games said last year it's "open" to blockchain games available on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain game made it to the store in June.

While Mojang isn't closing the door on incorporating blockchain in the future, it concludes by saying that "we have no plans of using blockchain technology in Minecraft as of now."
